Mass shootings have become an epidemic with over 200 having been committed so far throughout the year. One method we can implement to reduce the amount of gun related fatalities is to put stronger restrictions on concealed carry. Right to carry laws are laws that allow anybody without a criminal record to apply for a license and purchase a weapon that they may then store on their body in public (with some exceptions). The number of gun related deaths each year is ~30,000 when also taking into account gun-related suicides.
The most important metric by which we can judge Right to Carry is how it impacts violent crime. It's not enough to say that banning guns works because then there is no gun crime. If the type of crime being committed merely shifts from gun crime to other crimes then the restriction would have been for naught. Many institutions including the National Academies of Science have found no substantial decrease in crime, discrediting the famous works done by the John Lott and David Mustard Paper.
One particular paper presented recently by John Donohue has solved a problem that this specific research field has been stuck with. With many states implementing RTC laws more useable data has been made available. Using this data with a modern statistical model has allowed Donohue to make the most currently accurate estimation on the effects of RTC laws. In his report, Donohue has presented solid reason to believe that implementing concealed carry laws actually increases crime rates in a state. Sometimes this rate can be as high as 15%!
